Internships: Are designed to provide AUP students with real exposure to Coast Guard missions both at operational units at a Headquarters/policy-level.

Students may be able to earn college credit for their experience, depending on the policies of their school.

Eligibility: All currently currently-enrolled AUP students that have achieved AUP Senior status and are in good standing in the program may apply for an internship.

Before the Internship

  • Familiarize yourself with the AUP Internship Guide.

    • Students must have the ODU uniform, at a minimum, with all proper AUX insignia.

    • Be aware that you will be on unfunded orders, therefore lodging/meals and/or commuting expenses will be out of pocket. In some cases, the unit may be able to provide lodging in UPH and meals.

  • Submit the online Internship Application.

    • Provide multiple locations/units that you would be interested in.

    • Specify if you would also be interested in a virtual internship.

  • The internship coordinator will contact you to discuss assignment options.

  • Once assigned, contact your Internship Supervisor to arrange start date, location, confirm uniform of the day, orders, and other details discussed in the AUP Internship Guide. Complete items 1 and 2 on the Internship Check Sheet (Appendix A of the Internship Guide).

  • Arrange travel, lodging, obtain additional uniform items, and other personal details.

During the Internship

  • Report for the internship at the designated location, date, and time agreed to with your Internship Supervisor.

  • Fill out the Internship Check Sheet with your supervisor (Appendix A of the AUP Internship Guide).

  • Keep accurate records of your experience in the Internship Check Sheet.

  • Prepare a midway evaluation using proper Coast Guard Auxiliary AUP memo format (Appendix B of the AUP Internship Guide).

After the Internship

  • Finalize the Internship Check Sheet with your supervisor.

  • Participate in final personnel check out procedures at the internship site OR virtually if pursuing a virtual internship.

  • Send a thank you note to your supervisor.

  • Submit the completed Internship Check Sheet (Appendix A), After Action Report (Appendix B) using proper Coast Guard Auxiliary AUP memo format, and any attachments.
